August 19, 2012August 19, 2012 • Maven • Add your comment

One of my most favorite things to eat in the world are artichokes, and so I was excited to have the chance to drive through Castroville, the Artichoke Capital of the World! And as a bonus, at the end, I’ll even give you my special recipe for artichoke pasta – a family favorite!

Agriculture in California’s Salinas Valley

August 19, 2012August 19, 2012 • Maven • 1 Comment

I must confess that whenever I travel the Central Valley, I see grapes, pistachios and almonds growing, plus citrus, lots of citrus – and I think to myself, this is not what I eat. My family eats some table grapes or oranges on occasion, and every once in awhile I buy pistachios, but when I…

Late afternoon in downtown Los Angeles

July 25, 2012July 25, 2012 • Maven • Add your comment

Last month, I attended a conference in downtown LA.  On the last night, I took a hotel room and stayed around for the cocktail reception on the 51st floor of a skyscraper, and then went for a stroll around downtown afterwards.

An architectural symphony: The Walt Disney Concert Hall

July 25, 2012July 25, 2012 • Maven • 1 Comment

This is Los Angeles’ spectacular Walt Disney Concert Hall, home of the L.A. Philharmonic.   I remember reading somewhere that the inspiration for the building is a rose. Do you see a rose in that building? Whether you do or don’t, it is a spectacular building.

Neon eye candy: Universal City Walk at night

July 15, 2012July 15, 2012 • Maven • Add your comment

It may sound strange, but there aren’t many public gathering places in Los Angeles. While there are many places to go in Los Angeles that can accomodate large numbers of people, there isn’t really an equivalent of New York’s Times Square. I think the closest thing is Universal’s City Walk, although I suspect it’s not…

The shrinking Salton Sea

July 10, 2012July 11, 2012 • Maven • 5 Comments

Ah … the Salton Sea. It is a place I have visited many times; it is a place I’m sure I will visit yet again (even over the howls of protest from my children).  On a tour I took of the Lower Colorado River region in March of this year, we visited the Salton Sea…

Lower Colorado River area: from Topock Marsh to Blythe

July 5, 2012July 5, 2012 • Maven • Add your comment

The Colorado River is 1450 miles long, it’s watershed encompassing parts of seven U.S. states as well as Mexico. It’s headwaters are in the Rocky Mountains, but by the time it’s reached Arizona, it’s already been dammed, by Hoover Dam, Glen Canyon Dam, and more. The Topock Marsh is southeast of Needles on the California-Arizona…

San Luis National Wildlife Refuge (minus the wildlife)

July 3, 2012July 4, 2012 • Maven • Add your comment

This is the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge. There isn’t any wildlife in this picture, though, because I am visiting at the wrong time of the year. If it were in the winter months, this place would be filled with migratory birds, but they’ve all moved on by now. There are some birds off in…

Aquarium pictures: Jellyfish and a few other sea creatures …

June 21, 2012June 21, 2012 • Maven • 1 Comment

In my travels, I have visited a few aquariums. These pictures are from the Aquarium of the Bay in San Francisco, the Long Beach Aquarium and Heal the Bay’s aquarium in Santa Monica. Always one to take pictures wherever I go, visiting an aquarium is no exception. I have found the jellyfish to be the…
