The Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge

If you want to see the best of the Salton Sea, then you should visit the Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge at the southern end of the sea.

Really, the *best* time to visit the Imperial Valley is over the winter months.  It’s when the most birds are in residence and the weather is mild enough that you can walk out to see them.

The refuge has about 2000 acres of land, some of which is managed as wetlands and some of which is farmed to provide forage for migratory birds and wildlife.

There are many geothermal plants in the area, which coexist peacefully with the wildlife and the farming operations in the area.

Of course, these birds all decided to take to the sky when I wasn’t anywhere near them …
